As if it has anything to do with the news media… for the pleasure of the MRC’s anti-gay readership, Tim Graham reported this anyway:
Chris Johnson at The Washington Blade reported the National Stonewall Democrats have identified 470 “openly LGBT delegates” out of 5,963 delegates expected in Charlotte today. That’s almost eight percent of the total, but Stonewall Democrats executive director Jerame Davis said “We’re finally getting to the point where we get closer to appropriate measure of representation as compared to the population at large, although we’re not quite to that point.” The pro-gay Williams Institute estimated this year that four percent of the adult population is “LGBT.”
Obviously, Graham doesn’t see this as a good thing, emphasizing the miniscule percentage of gay people that are now delegates, which isn’t even double digits. Yet, somehow, 8% is probably too much already for any far-right conservative. I don’t his type can handle all that gayness being all over the place at a convention. I wouldn’t expect him to attend the DNC solely for this reason.
This whole thing bothered Graham so much that he was counting almost every delegate being added from every state, focusing on every small percentage that the number was going up, and even comparing it to the 2008 convention (emphasis mine):
Later, the group updated its count to 486 delegates, or 8.15 percent of the total. The count is up from 277 delegates at the 2008 convention in Denver.
Add alternate delegates and party committee members, and the group counts 530 LGBT “participants,” including 11 transgenders (seven delegates, one alternate, three committee members.) Three states are sending LGBT delegates for the first time: Alaska, Arkansas, and Mississippi.
Again, the relevance of such a low number, while a breakthrough, is not seen as a good thing to Graham. This is his subtle way of having an anti-gay freakout, and showing all right-wingers and evangelical Christians (who read NewsBusters) how gay-oriented the convention is going to be, hence very toxic. This will, in turn, make them freakout, as well.
However, amidst all this joy for LGBTers, Graham used the latter end of his article to try and make the gay community look bad, claiming they “might make trouble” for the DNC, because of a promise to protest during a Catholic prayer. Graham quoted a pro-gay site, saying in-part “Enough is enough!”.
To Graham, and NewsBusters readers, that translates to “The Homosexuals are coming!“
Stick to “media analysis“, Tim. That’s the only thing you know about, but still do very poorly.
